Education

How education will be resumed ?

The interim school will be a temporary school set up in the intervening period between disaster and stability. The working pattern of this is similar to that of the local schools in the respective areas with a maximum number of same teachers and caregivers who used to teach the children in their local schools. It will maintain a level of trust and familiarity with the caregivers for the children who are in need of emotional support. The school will provide the primary education for the class 1st to 5th which majorly includes children of age group 6-11.

After the disaster period, based on the level of damage to schools in an area or their unavailability to children, the location of interim schools will be decided. As the level of destruction varies in each area, it will be the foremost and necessary step to select the final locations for the temporary set up Interim Schools.

The next step is regarding the allocation of teachers and students which will be processed through contacting the staff working in those local schools which are now damaged and closed. After the staff confirmation, the information of the interim school will be put across the areas through the assistance of the local government body.

Why primary education ?

Children in the primary age group (6-12) are the ones who are the most vulnerable to a disaster, since early childhood years lay the foundation of their future development, providing a strong base for lifelong learning. But due to disaster, there is a lapse or failure to provide quality early childhood education, it limits children’s futures by denying them opportunities to reach their full potential which gets stronger since it is often assumed by parents or teachers that children are more resilient to trauma or “unaffected because they may not show the same response pattern as adults". And at the same time, the children do not even have the verbal skills developed through which they can describe their experiences.

As a result, children who are at this critical stage of development which requires a great deal of attention lapses in education for months can lead to children forgetting what they have previously learned, as well as pushing or exposing children to monetary economic benefits, leading to dropout. So this fundamental age of childhood is the first one to shut down after any disaster since they are considered the most vulnerable and are the last ones to open up. As a result of all of these factors, we decided to concentrate on the age group of early primary school students.
