Structure of Interim School

Site selection

  • Interim schools to be built in new locations that do not require long time to clean up the debris after the cyclone as it would be a time demanding phase will delay the commencement of schools.

  • Avoid locations or main entrances close to industrial areas, military camps, large road junctions or traffic interchanges that could lead to a lot of noise disturbances.

  • Under the vigilance of local government body, a safe and debris free location is to be chosen to keep children away from destruction sight to maintain their emotional and concentration level.

Structure

Interim schools being the temporary schools for a short period of time demands a temporary structure which can be erected quickly as well as be dismantled when regular schools will start.

The choice and availability of construction materials is a major factor in the design of the interim school. Since the need to prepare a functioning school as early as possible after a disaster, materials which can be locally sourced or easily procured within a reasonable timeframe will be a finer option.

However, as the period of cyclone is predetermined and authorities prepare a well being beforehand, a well made collapsable and temporary canvas wall tent could be arranged to be quickly used in times of need.

What Is A Wall Tent?

A wall tent is typically a tent with four vertical canvas walls.  Because of the space and durability they offer, it is widely used for campings, housing, relief and refugee tents. Cotton canvas is the most used fabric for wall tents because of its breathability, durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions. A double layer of roofing with tarpaulin will make the structure more waterproof and stable.

Pros Of Cotton Canvas Fabric:

  • Cotton is generally more durable than synthetic blends and it does not deteriorate from sun exposure.

  • Because of the durability of fabric, cotton canvas is a great choice to use over and over again in any season and for many years.

  • Being a natural fabric, it breathes, allowing airflow and keeping the insides of the tent from becoming damp and it is an eco-friendly and sustainable option.

If not a pre-made pull apart canvas tent which comes with detachable poles, then the base structure can also be made from locally available materials which can be bamboo woods, iron poles and walls be made from double layer canvas tarpaulin sheets.

Another way forward can be by making contact with local military camps in order to source the raw materials needed to build their military camps, which could be used for building the temporary school. Through such a way , there would be no wastage of materials which are used in building a temporary school,  once the permanent structures of schools get restored. And these materials could be easily procured within a reasonable timeframe , and could be set up easily and quickly.

Interim Schooling (9).png
Creating a personalised child friendly interiors
  • The Interiors of interim schools  are made visually attractive and colorful , which can easily gather a child's attention. Since researchers have found “how classroom wall color can affect attention of students in terms of cognitive responses at the primary school level”(Duyan, 2015).

  • For interim classrooms to be colorful , a way could be using children's self created works  on walls which will give a personalized touch to the classroom and thus a feeling of belonging .

  • The interim school will contain  a lot of windows , since the idea is to create  a open sort of school and not to restrict to 4 walls of classroom , thus creating a direct connection with the nature since many researches have found that Student motivation, enjoyment, and engagement are better in natural settings, perhaps because of nature’s reliably positive effects on mood (Takayama et al.2014).and how window view of vegetation  show decrease in stress levels(Li and sullivan,2016).

  • Interim schools would have an attractive option for children to move freely indoors and outdoors , since such a space would create a sense of freedom to express themselves and thus boost uninterested students and thus  reduce  dropout rates (Ruiz-Gallardo et al.2013)
